Some boss fights are forgotten the moment they’re beaten. But some remain in your memory and you sometimes want to replay the game just for that single boss. Here’s a top 10 list of those types of bosses – with videos!
10. Virtual Reality, Fallout 3
When you enter one of the virtual reality pods in one of the vaults, you (ironically) get stuck in a virtual reality suburb which is run by a psychopath. You need to do his bidding in order to get out. This was one of the most original “bosses” in recent memory and deserves a spot to kick off this list.
9. Tank, Left 4 Dead
Ok, it’s not really a boss.. or is it? When you play in Versus, he sure feels like one. In the hands of a skilled player and a strong team to back you up, the Tank can become very deadly. Especially when pwning noobs. In Left 4 Dead for the first time ever in a video game you actually get to play as a boss, which on it’s own is great.
PS Valve, I still fuckin hate you and will never buy any of your games again. Go make love with EA and make more L4D sequels. Oooh, maybe even a paid add-on pack?!
8. Death, Hitman Blood Money
When you think you’ve finished the game and it’s the end of Hitman (and you think Diane is a bitch), some players took it a bit too harsh and started pounding the controller. Then they heard a heart beat. OMG IS HE ALIVE? The credits are rolling, but you can revive Codename 47 and shoot all the bastards.
7. Rex, Metal Gear Solid
The fight with Metal Gear Rex in MGS is truly epic. Not only did it almost make me cry (FOXXXX!!!), but it was something totally different. This is the first ever cinematic epic battle in a 3D game (with a big robot!). Metal Gear Solid is known for it’s epic boss battles, but this one makes it a pioneer in epic boss fights.
6. Lake monster fight, Resident Evil 4
This boss fight changed the rules. So imagine you’re just swimming around a lake in a boat and suddenly a huge-ass monster attacks you. What do you do? Harpoon the bastard and go on a lake monster rodeo! This is the first epic boss fight in RE4 and it set the tone and standard for that games other bosses. Did I mention it’s also one of the best games of the PS2 generation?
5. Agnes & Rudra, Devil May Cry 3
Even if you played on the easiest difficulty, you most likely had a very freackin’ hard time beating these guys. DMC3 is one of the hardest — and at the same time satisfying — games in recent memory. And this boss fight really tested your skills. You had to fight 2 really strong enemies in a small room, and the only way to survive it was to use split-second attack windows and try to avoid the enemies.
4. Big Ass Worm, Gears of War 2
It’s not really a boss fight. Or is it? You get swallowed by a huge worm, get to run around inside it and kill all of it’s hearts. This was really something different – half an hour running around worm intestines definitely makes it a top position on our list.
3. The Boss, Metal Gear Solid 3
The emotions, the scenery, the fact that you’re killing off the mom of Revolver Ocelot, everything was just perfect in this boss fight. Face it, how often do you fight in a field of white flowers? If you haven’t gotten to this boss, you’ve missed out a lot.
2. 300-foot-tall Monster, Resistance 2
My jaw literally dropped when I saw the 300-foot-tall Chimera pick me up. This guy really pushed the PS3 hardware and set new standards for the “BIG ASS MONSTER” category of video games.
1. The End, Metal Gear Solid 3
Fighting an old sniper in MGS3 was the best boss-fighting experience I can ever remember in a game. You move quietly, use cover, scope the area, look for lens-blinks, hide and a whole lot more in this sniping duel. Play it on Hard and you will really prove your skill. When I first played it, it took me well over an hour to shoot the poor old guy.
